  • Navigation Basics - A Lost Art

    Price: $125

    Dead Reckoning, A Lost Art: April 25 - May 19 (4 weeks, four 1.5 hour classes). Learn the basics of navigation without the aid of electronics. Electronics are fantastic, but what happens when your battery dies, or the navigation system isn?'t working or calibrated properly. Knowing navigational basics is critical to safe boating. Learn how to read a chart, use a compass, understand lights, buoy's, traffic schemes, plot a course and pick up some great tips with this hands-on navigation course. The class is available to both adults and children. Children 12 and under are requested to have an adult present unless permission is granted otherwise from CISF staff.   • Home-School Program: Jr Nature Explorers, Ages 5 - 7

    Price: $220

    Every Tuesday and Thursday children between the ages of 5 and 7 will explore the natural world at Fort Getty through this program for young homeschooled children. They will visit the Fox Hill Salt Marsh, rocky shores, and nature trails to learn, explore, climb, build, and create! We will be observing the changes that happen in nature during spring as the world comes back to life. Every week will include exploration, play, nature art, science, and craft projects.   • Home-School Program: Grades 3 - 8, Farming and Weather Systems

    Price: $300

    For the second session of our spring homeschooling program, children in grades 3-8 will work on their gardening skills and learn about the complex weather systems of Narragansett Bay! One day a week we will focus on farming at Fox Hill Farm - starting seeds, planning, growing, and tending to our garden beds at Fox Hill Farm. The other day each week will be focused on weather systems, learning about the water cycle, wind patterns, current, tide, and extreme weather. We will look at and discuss how these things affect us as sailors, farmers, and people who live by the ocean.   • Home-School Explorations, Friday drop-in sessions

    Price: $25

    Spend a few hours outside with us in Nature! Climb rocks, learn about birds, go on a hike and more! Spring sessions will be held from 12-3 pm on Fridays. $25/person. Ages 4 - 15. Upcoming Explorations: April 29: All About Trees Through exploration, crafts and games, we will learn all about trees - their parts, how they function, how to identify different types of trees, and, most importantly, how important they are to the ecosystem and to us! May 13: Sun and Shadows Experiment and have fun while learning about the sun, light, and shadows. We will create sundials to learn how people told time before clocks, create shadow art, and more! May 27: How SailBoats Work Learn how boats work through hands-on activities and experiments. Participants will learn about the forces that help sailboats float and sail, and then design their own boats to test in the bay! And of course, if weather permits, we will get to go out sailing on our boats as well! June 3: Kayaking Come spend your Friday exploring the Fox Hill Salt Marsh and Narragansett Bay on Kayaks! Participants will ride on double or single kayaks depending on their age and comfort level, and get to enjoy this watersport while also seeing what marine creatures and sea birds we share this beautiful area with! We have life jackets available for all who need them.

  • Outdoor Rocks! Grades 2-8, Tuesday's 3:30-5 pm

    Price: $90

    Come explore and climb the rocks at Beavertail and Fort Getty with us! This program is perfect for adventurers who love to be outside and exploring. We will spend the first two weeks meeting at Beavertail and hiking the rocks there, and the last three weeks at our favorite Fort Getty. Location: First 2 at Beavertail, last 3 weeks at Ft Getty. Drop off locations will be communicated by email ahead of time. May 2nd - June 3rd

  • Eco-Club, Grades 5-8, Monday's, 3:30 - 5 PM

    Price: $50

    This project-based program is perfect for those in grades 5-8 who are budding environmentalists! This program will include projects and experiments on themes on how important the ocean is in fighting climate change and what can be done, and is being done, in Rhode Island and the Narragansett Bay! Participants will discuss what simple changes we can work towards, participate in a variety of hands-on projects, and work to create positive change in Jamestown and the Bay!   • Intermediate Sailing Grades 4th-5th, Fridays, 3:30 - 5 pm

    Price: $100

    Calling all 4th and 5th grade sailing enthusiasts! While it may not be warm enough to get on the water every day as yet, there is still so much to learn and do to get ready for the summer sailing season. All 4th and 5th graders with a passion for sailing, whether beginner, intermediate, or advanced, are encouraged to join our Intermediate Sailing class on Fridays, where we will learn about basic sailing terms and rules, points of sail, and parts of the boat. We will also learn chart basics, current, tide, wind, and weather patterns that affect sailing through hands-on activities and games. Hopefully we will be able to spend a few days on the water as well (weather and temperature permitting)! All participants must come prepared for cold weather with layers and gear to keep them dry and warm. May 2 - June 3
