4th Grade Sailing

4th Grade Sailing Week:
August 24 – 28, 2026

CISF is thrilled to offer a free week of sailing lessons to Fourth Grade students enrolled in Jamestown’s Melrose School. The program takes place the week before school starts and is completely free to all participants, providing 15 hours of sailing instruction!

Background: The program introduces sailing to children at an age when many are starting to find their passions and strengths. Living on an island, we feel strongly that it is important for everyone to have the chance to get on the water and learn how to sail. Sailing helps students develop confidence and leadership skills, as well as provides teamwork opportunities.

Goal #1: Provide students with a safe, supportive environment in which to increase their comfort level on the water, learn new skills or hone existing skills, work as a team, and develop leadership skills

Goal #2: Help the fourth-grade classes start to bond and form friendships before the first day of school, preparing students for social and academic success as they enter a new school year.

Overview: During the week-long program, the basics of sailing are introduced. CISF has developed its own sailing curriculum and notebook that each student receives to support their learning. The notebook includes sailing terminology, points of sail, weather and safety information, and more. On the water, staff instruct and supervise students, helping some to learn to sail for the first time, and others to hone their skills. CISF’s Hobie Waves, O’Pen Skiff, and Tiwal sailboats are used along with one-two powerboats for safety (operated by a CISF instructor).

Interested?: Program details are communicated to Jamestown Schools to be sent out to 4th grade families prior to the program. If you are a Jamestowner whose child does not attend Jamestown Schools, please reach out to Haley at haley@jamestownsailing.org to discuss participation.

Register: Program registration opens Friday, June 5 at  7 am through our CampBrain registration system. A link will be posted on this page to register at that time.

Thank you! This program is made possible in part thanks to support from The Jamestown Education Foundation.
