A cornerstone of CISF’s mission is to engage and connect people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds with the joy of boating.
A group sail may be with people you know or people you are yet to meet! Our group sails are social and will introduce you to sailing on Narragansett Bay! Whether you want to ride along and take in the scenery or get some time in on the helm and trim, we invite you to join us in a comfortable and totally non-judgmental environment.
These lessons maximize your learning, enabling the instructor to focus on what you want to learn and practice.
Areas of focus We recommend selecting one skill set per session: helming, tactics, anchoring, sail tuning, spinnaker, picking up and leaving a mooring or man over board recovery for small keel boats.
Length: Lessons are two hours long, but longer or shorter lessons can be accommodated.
Cost: There is a base rate fee, with an additional cost for each person you add to your private lessons.
Sailing for women only, this is a social sail—you can enjoy a relaxed evening on the water, with as much or as little instruction as you’d like.
Lessons will have no more than 4 people, and must have a minimum of 2 people.

All lessons are two hours long with a few exceptions – Adventure Sails, Learn to Race, and Private Lessons may have different lengths by request and availability. The J/22 or J/7 are available for all private and group sails and reserving a boat is on a first come, first serve basis. When booking, if you have a particular boat you would like to request, we will try our best to accommodate you, if possible. Our J/22 is kept in TPG Dutch Harbor Boat Yard on the west side of Conanicut Island and our J/7 is kept in TPG Marina East Ferry in Jamestown.
Registration is on a connected system called FareHarbor. Registration will open for all Adult Sailing and Women’s Sailing sessions in late April 2026. About our Boats
J/22: The J/22 is a responsive, stable, and safe small keelboat with a fixed lead keel. The boat appeals to all ages and skill levels. It has a mainsail and a jib, but can be sailed under mainsail only, meaning more opportunities to sail when most others stay home. It holds 3-4 people comfortably, 5 if some are small.
J/7: The 23’ J/7 is a modern design daysailer with huge, sit-in cockpit, easy-to-handle sail plan, and built-in stability that’s second to none in the size range. This is the perfect sized daysailer – roomy enough to bring the whole gang. The J/7 couldn’t be simpler. With one hand on the tiller and the other on the main sheet, one can happily sail for hours on end in a wide variety of conditions and only under main, meaning more opportunities to sail when most others stay home. It holds 3-5 people
comfortably.
